WHAT YOU NEED
HOW IT WORKS
Step 1: Prepare embroidery hoop
Before you begin with your DIY baby mobile made from an embroidery hoop and pom-poms, the embroidery hoop needs to be prepared. This base ensures that the wool threads can be securely attached later on and that the mobile retains its stable shape.
Here's how:
- Carefully separate the embroidery hoop into the inner and outer ring.
- Then, cover the outer edge of the inner ring completely with Wonder Tape.
- The Wonder Tape reliably secures the wool yarn and prevents it from slipping while crafting.
Make sure to apply the tape evenly so that the wrapping will be neat in the next step.
Tip: The Wonder Tape makes the work much easier because the yarn sticks directly to the hoop and does not need to be constantly tightened.
Step 2: Prepare the mobile for hanging
To ensure the pom-poms are evenly distributed on the mobile later on, first attach the suspension threads to the embroidery hoop.
Here is how:
- Cut three yarn threads in your preferred color to a length of about 30 cm each.
- Attach each thread to the inner embroidery hoop at two opposite points using a tight double knot.
- Repeat this process with all three threads.
- Make sure the threads are evenly spaced so that the embroidery hoop is divided into six segments of equal size if possible.
Tip: An even distribution ensures that the pom-poms can be arranged harmoniously later and that the mobile hangs nicely balanced.
Step 3: Prepare the embroidery hoop
Now reassemble the inner and outer embroidery hoops. Tighten the screw on the outer ring firmly so that the attached threads are securely fixed. Then carefully trim the excess thread ends with scissors.
Step 4: Make pom-poms
Now it's time to make the fluffy pom-poms that will give your DIY mobile its playful look later on.
Here's how:
- Take two parts of the Prym Pom-Pom Maker and place them perfectly back-to-back.
- The side with the rounded bulges should meet the smooth back of the second part.
- Hold both stencil parts firmly together so they do not slip while working.
Step 5: Wrap the wool yarn around the template
Wrap the wool yarn around both sides of the template pieces.
Step 6 - Wrap until reaching a semicircle
Keep winding until the semicircle is closed in the middle and you have a flat surface there. Then cut off the remaining thread.
Step 7: Assemble the pom-pom templates
Insert the two templates into each other by sliding the straight tab into the tab with the opening.
Step 8: Cut the pompom open
- Take a sharp pair of craft, wool, or sewing scissors.
- Cut the wrapped yarn strands all the way around along the outer edge of the pom-pom maker.
- Work carefully and make sure to cut through all the strands completely.
- Be sure to hold the maker firmly while doing this so that the yarn strands do not slip.
Step 9: Tie off and secure the pom-pom
- Cut a sufficiently long piece of wool yarn.
- Carefully feed the yarn through the opening created between the two pom-pom maker halves.
- Pull the thread ends tight and tie a secure double knot.
- Tighten the knot firmly so that all wool threads are securely fixed in the center.
- Afterwards, check that the knot is secure and cannot come undone.
Step 10: Finish the pom-pom
- Release the pom-pom maker: Gently slide the two halves of the maker apart and remove them from the finished pom-pom.
- Trim the pom-pom into shape: Trim any protruding threads with a sharp pair of scissors until the pom-pom has an even, round shape.
- Prepare the hanger: Cut a piece of yarn to your desired length and tie it securely to the pom-pom. You can use this thread later to attach the pom-pom to the embroidery hoop mobile.
- Make more pom-poms: Create a total of seven pom-poms in various sizes to give your mobile a varied look. In our example: 1 pom-pom at approx. 9 cm, 2 pom-poms at approx. 5.5 cm, 2 pom-poms at approx. 4.5 cm, and 2 pom-poms at approx. 3 cm.
Step 11: Attach pom-poms to the embroidery hoop
-
Attach the middle pompon:
First, tie a pompon with a tight double knot exactly in the center of the embroidery hoop – where the wool threads cross. -
Attach additional pompons:
Attach the remaining pompons to the free areas between the yarn threads on the embroidery hoop using a double knot for each. -
Finishing touches:
Carefully trim any excess wool with scissors. However, take care not to trim the ends too short so that the knots do not come undone.
Step 12: Attach the satin ribbon as a hanger to the embroidery hoop
Attach satin ribbon as a hanger to the embroidery hoop
Cut the satin ribbon into three pieces: one 40 cm long and two 30 cm long.
Tie the ends of one of the shorter ribbons to opposite sides of the hoop using a secure double knot. Repeat this step with the second short satin ribbon so that it crosses the first ribbon in the center.
Step 13: Attach satin ribbon for hanging
Now place the longer satin ribbon centrally around the point where the two shorter ribbons cross and tie the satin ribbon there.
Step 14: Finish mobile & hang up
Done! Your handmade DIY embroidery hoop mobile with pom-poms is now ready to hang.
- Choose any spot in the nursery or child's room where the mobile will look great.
- Attach it securely by tying the yarns and satin ribbons with a firm double knot.
👉 Safety note: Never leave your baby unattended with the mobile. Hang it in a way that the child cannot directly reach it or get tangled in it.
